The brainchild of SA comedy stalwart Joe Parker, Parker’s Comedy & Jive is the realisation of a long-term dream to provide a regular home for stand-up comedy and also to develop the art as a regular attraction in the vein of theatre and movies. “We have a lot of talented comedians in South Africa, but not a lot of places for them to showcase their great work,” says Parker. “With Parker’s, Johannesburg now has a purpose-built venue run by a team who are passionate about comedy.” The venue also obviously offers visitors all the perks of visiting Montecasino, including ample, secure parking, a host of restaurants and a mind-boggling variety of gaming opportunities.

The development of local talent is also high on the agenda for the Parker’s team. “Apart from giving South African comics a place to perform regularly in front of an appreciative audience, we also plan to bring in an international performer every two weeks,” says Parker. “In the UK, there are more talented comedians around than there are spots available on the circuit, which means that the average standard of work there is extremely high. By bringing those quality performers out to our venue, we hope to encourage our local comedians to work outside of their comfort zones and ultimately, better the quantity and quality of working comedians in South Africa. We will be running regular workshops for comics and anybody who is interested in improving their comedic skills. The overseas comics will participate in the workshops and share their experiences with locals”.

The venue, which seats 280 people in a relaxed and classy atmosphere, is open from Thursday to Sunday every week. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays the best local and international comedy while Sundays feature the BATS. After the show each night, the dance floor at the venue opens until the early hours and will feature the best in dance music.
Parker’s Comedy & Jive is situated near the cinemas at Montecasino, next to the Boogaloos Skate Park. Admission fees are between R70 and R120.
